The Austin American-Statesman is proud to partner with Austin’s nonprofit community for the past twenty-one years. Beginning in 1993 the Capitol 10K race started donating proceeds from its event to local community non-profit organizations. The City of Austin Hike & Bike Trail received the first donation of $23,000. In 2006 the race made its largest donation of $201,452 to People’s Community Clinic and has exceeded the $2.7 Million amount in total donations to Austin’s community following the 2013 event.

Philanthropic History

The Statesman Capitol 10,000 is Texas’ largest 10K and the seventy largest in the nation, with over 18,000 participants in 2013. The race starts at the Ann Richards Bridge, which crosses over Lady Bird Lake (part of the Colorado River) and runs up to and by the Texas State Capitol Building. Bands playing live music line the race course, energizing the runners with upbeat entertainment as they wind their way along this scenic and at times, hilly, race route finishing back at Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake.

Annual Attendance

Betzy Jimenez, a former all-Big 12 cross country and track standout at the University of Texas, rallied in midrace and sprinted to victory Sunday in the women’s competition at the Statesman Capitol 10,000. She finished in 35 minutes, 27 seconds, just six seconds in front of Meagan Nedlo, who raced at the 2012 U.S. Olympic marathon trials.
