Subject: CapKids Final Race
During the 16 years that the Statesman CapKids race has been a part of Statesman Capitol 10,000 weekend, thousands of children have eagerly taken their marks. We, at the Austin American-Statesman, have truly appreciated everyone’s participation — from our young runners, their families and sponsors to vendors, staff and volunteers. After careful consideration and fiscal analysis, however, we have determined that 2014 will be the final year for the CapKids race.
It was not a decision we took lightly, but it is one that will contribute to the continued longevity of the Cap10K — now approaching its 38th year. We are thrilled that we will be able to apply additional resources to strengthening race weekend and improving the experience for all — participants, organizations, sponsors, vendors and spectators alike.
Potential plans include adding a stroller division, a family wave at the start line and an engaging CapKids Zone at the finish line festival that offers face painting, a petting zoo and a rock-climbing wall. We also plan to incorporate elementary schools into the Cap10K School Challenges, which will round out the program that already includes middle and high schools. As always, we will continue to offer special race entry fees for our youth and school participants.
We are excited for the future of Cap10K and making it a memorable experience for participants young and old. We genuinely hope you are, too, and will make plans to join us on April 12, 2015 and beyond.
Complete race coverage and the top results will be printed in Sunday’s Austin American-Statesman and available here online. Everyone’s a winner! To be eligible for awards, all children must run in their appropriate age wave. The awards presentation will start at 10:30 a.m. The top three boys and top three girls in each age group will receive custom medals. Race results will be posted online by 12:00 p.m. on race day. The winners of the Elementary School Challenge will be announced on Friday following the race, after the official results have been confirmed.
