We are Marathon Kids and we are on a mission to get kids moving. Through running, we show kids they can achieve more than they ever thought possible and put them on the path to healthier lives. Our Marathon Kids work at their own pace to run or walk a total of four marathons, and we provide the training, rewards, tools, and resources to keep them moving. We believe every kid deserves to live a happy, healthy life and that any adult can be empowered and trained to become an inspiring coach.

Attend Austin 10K’r social events to complete miles towards your Marathon Kids training log. Each social event will have its own Marathon Kids family 1-mile route and map. Marathon Kids can earn a special edition armadillo half-mile or one-mile achievement stamp in their training log for participating.  As an additional bonus Marathon Kids headquarters will award prizes for kids with the special edition armadillo achievement stamps on their training logs.  So, start your training and collect those stamps.

Moonlight Tower #12 Run – Route Description

map_my_route_17The Moonlight Tower 12 Run is a creative 4 to 6-mile route that travels into downtown Austin to seek out three of only 17 remaining light towers. The Moonlight Towers were popularized in the 1993 movie ‘Dazed and Confused‘ starring Matthew McConaughey however, they’ve been a part of the Austin skyline since 1894. After the run, you’ll be an expert in spotting these Texas historical landmarks. Starting from the Statesman’s West parking lot we will head into the city across Congress Ave. Bridge which stretches over Lady Bird Lake. The route will take a turn a Cesar Chavez and travel westward over to City Hall and Guadalupe St. Follow Guadalupe through the Second St. District northward to the Faulk Central Library where the #21 Moonlight Tower stands at the corner of W. 9th St. Continue north to 12th street and hang a left. Continue westward for a few blocks before the next #13 Moonlight Tower will appear on the corner of 12th & Rio Grande in front of the Austin Community College Rio Grande campus. Continue westward on 12th across N. Lamar and up the hill into Clarksville Neighborhood. At the top of the hill you will find the #12 Moonlight Tower on the corner of Blanco & W. 12th. To complete the 6-mile out and back route continue on W. 12th to West Lynn. Turn right at West Lynn and travel about three blocks north to Enfield Rd. Use caution crossing Enfield and continue up to Niles Rd.; left on Niles and over three blocks to Hartford Rd. where you will U-turn and retrace your steps back the Statesman.

It is our recommendation that participants use sidewalks, pedestrian pathways or hike & bike trails and avoid using the street. There are NO STREET CLOSURES for this route. Volunteer

The social runs have begun to take off in popularity and we could use an extra set of hands on occasion to prepare the activities for each meeting. Light set-up and clean-up opportunities available for those who want to sandwich their run with volunteering before and after the meet-up. Also, looking for those local yokels who’ve been their-done that, to share their experience for running and walking in Austin. Good directions and insight on local routes always welcomed by novice guests. If you’d like to share your time please email us for more info.
