Route Description

map_my_route_17The Global Running Day run is a creative route that intersects the park, crosses the river and travels up a newly renovated hike & bike trail along Shoal Creek to Pease Park. Starting from the Statesman parking lot the run will kick off passing a familiar statue “Night Wings” on the way down Barton Springs Road. After passing through the dense canopy of pecan trees outside Palmer Events Center the route takes a turn at the Dougherty Arts Center and travels north through Butler Park. Take a moment to view the Austin skyline when you cross the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge over Lady Bird Lake toward Sand Beach Park. On the north shore take the spiraling pedestrian ramp down to the lake trail. The trail will wind back along the river heading downstream and when you pass the Seaholm Power Plant intact station the Shoal Creek tributary will be on your left. Follow the path along Shoal Creek and cross under West Cesar Chavez Street. Once you cross under the bridge, the new Austin Central Public Library will be on your left and the new Butterfly Bridge will be straight ahead.

It is our recommendation that participants use sidewalks, pedestrian pathways or hike & bike trails and avoid using the street. There are NO STREET CLOSURES for this route. Participants should obey traffic and pedestrian laws at all times. Please use caution when crossing streets and only cross at designated cross walks.

A Little More About the Events

There are no street closures or directional signage marking the route. Each event will incorporate a creative theme that highlights the culture of Austin and the Cap10K. Before each event we will have a short 2-3 minute meet ‘n’ greet with the race staff. Before we start we will review the event route, identify any notable sights to see and answers any questions. Maps, bottled water, high fives and selfies will be shared at each event.

The social runs have begun to take off in popularity and we could use an extra set of hands on occasion to prepare the activities for each meeting. Light set-up and clean-up opportunities available for those who want to sandwich their run with volunteering before and after the meet-up. Also, looking for those local yokels who’ve been their-done that, to share their experience for running and walking in Austin.
