The Statesman Capitol 10,000 has selected The Trail Foundation as the beneficiary of the April 12, 2015 race. The Trail Foundation will receive 1.00 from every Cap10K registration, which begins Oct. 3, 2014, at cap10k.com. Registrants will also have the option to donate to the beneficiary, and this year, the Statesman will match up to 10,000 of registrant donations.

The Trail Foundation helps protect and enhance the Butler Trail at Lady Bird Lake through careful improvements to infrastructure and conservation. Working in cooperation with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, it has built restrooms and water fountains; planted native trees and flowers; renovated lakefront gathering areas and trailheads, put in mile markers, and helped create the world-class Boardwalk that has enhanced the safety, usability and scenic beauty of the Trail.

“We are honored to have been selected as this year’s Cap10K beneficiary,” said Susan Rankin, executive director of The Trail Foundation. “The Trail is truly the heart of Austin, and as Austin grows, the number of Trail users grows as well. The support from the Cap10K will allow us to continue protecting and enhancing the Trail for Austinites and visitors alike.”

In its 38th year, the Statesman Capitol 10,000 is the largest 10K race in Texas and one of the top 10 in the nation. The Cap10K began in 1978 with 3,400 participants. In 2014, the race had more than 15,900 registered participants.

Changes are in store for next year’s Statesman Capitol 10,000.

The long-time 10K race, which will mark its 38th running in 2015, is dropping the CapKids Run and creating staggered starting waves in the main race.

Race organizers say they want to focus resources on enhancing the main race. Small children in strollers can still participate in a new stroller/family wave, and older children can run with their families. A new CapKids Zone finish line festival will feature face painting, a petting zoo and a rock-climbing wall.

For 34 of the past 35 years, Diane Key has swept through downtown Austin as part of the rolling street party known as the Statesman Capitol 10,000.

A middle- to back-of-the-packer, she’s never set any speed records. She just loves the event, and the people watching that goes with it. She’s also never worried about finishing the race — until this year.

Any strategy reserved for the women’s race at the Statesman Capitol 10,000 likely disappeared when Chris Kimbrough appeared out of the predawn rain showers Sunday to toe the starting line.

Kimbrough has one gear — all out — and no real game plan other than catch-me-if-you-can. Once she jumped to the lead, the other women runners had to hope that Kimbrough, a 44-year-old mother of six, would wear herself out.

Kenyan runner Eric Chirchir, the defending Statesman Capitol 10,000 champion, has a pretty solid road-racing record in Austin. He’s run three races here — all at the 10K distance — and he’s won every one. Ten years ago, he even set the city’s existing 10K record of 29 minutes, 3 seconds at the IBM Uptown Classic.

Even so, he’ll have his work cut out for him Sunday during the Statesman Capitol 10,000. Race director John Conley said Chirchir will face perhaps the strongest men’s field ever assembled in the 37-year history of the Cap 10K, one that includes former champion Scott MacPherson, a former Austinite who won the race in 2011 and 2012. Lee Troop, an Australian Olympic marathoner who won the race 20 years ago, also has entered.

Only a few dozen people have finished the Statesman Capitol 10,000 every year since the inaugural race in 1978, which drew a mere 3,400 participants. And Austinite Gerre Boardman is one of only two women in that select group.
“At first, I didn’t know anyone else who had done the race every year,” she said. “I knew there had to be others, but I didn’t have any way of finding them. I think it was the 25th year when the newspaper helped us all find each other. We’ve had a website since then and can communicate easily.”
She’s now in touch with Debbie Norman, the other female “Never Missed” group member, but it’s been a personal triumph to continue the tradition each year of doing the Capitol 10,000, the largest such race in Texas and one of the top 10 in the nation. The 37th annual Capitol 10,000 will take place April 6 in downtown Austin, with registration and details available at www.cap10k.com.
“I started running in 1969. I ran one or two miles, several times a week,” Boardman said. “The advertisement in the newspaper about the first Capitol 10,000 inspired me to try to run 6.2 miles. I only ran five miles in training runs before the first Cap 10. I was so happy and thrilled after that first race that I have continued the tradition every year since.” A few new things have been added for this year’s Cap 10K, which has been organized to be more of a race weekend experience. Palmer Events Center is the hub, and it’s easier than ever for families to join in the fun. You can park at Palmer on Saturday, April 5, take the kids to Butler Park for the Cap Kids one-mile challenge, return to Palmer to explore the Health & Fitness Expo and pick up your race packet, and then come back Sunday for the race. Also new this year is the Finish Line Festival, which will include live music, free massages, freebies, food and the awards ceremony.
The Cap 10K was Boardman’s first race, and her previous running experience had been around the Crockett High School track and her neighborhood of Cherry Creek in Southwest Austin. “That first morning of the Capitol 10,000, runners were everywhere,” she said. “I had never seen anything like it. The excitement of streaming down Congress Avenue and then around the (Lady Bird Lake) hike-and-bike trail – a place I’d never run before – was just incredible. So I’ve been pretty much wanting to be there every year since.” She doesn’t really change up her training before the race, but her usual routine involves running four times a week, with a longer run at the lake on Saturday mornings. “This time of year, I add a little distance to my longer runs,” she said. “This year, however, I decided to try something new. Every other week, I’ve been running the Capitol 10,000 course.”
And with all that experience, she offers some advice for first-timers: “Start slow. The first miles have lots of hills. Congress Avenue looks flat, but it isn’t – it’s going up. Try to stay steady through that part, and I think you will feel better later. Drink plenty of water, but (don’t) overdo.” Boardman said GU energy packets seem to help, too. “I never use them any other time, but I think they may help maintain your energy level,” she said. “I plan on having one packet right before the race starts and then another about halfway through.”
And while you’re in town, Boardman suggests checking out the Sweetish Hill Bakery & Cafe on West Sixth Street. “I go there every Saturday morning after my run for coffee, eggs and a sweet roll,” she said. “The hike-and-bike trail and Sweetish Hill Bakery are longtime favorites of mine.”

The Statesman Capitol 10,000 has selected SafePlace as the beneficiary of its 2014 race. SafePlace is an agency ending domestic violence through safety, healing, prevention and social change in Austin and Travis County. Funds raised will support SafePlace’s innovative Children’s Services program, designed to address the specific needs of youth who have witnessed or experienced violence.

“The Statesman is proud to support SafePlace and their work to raise awareness about domestic abuse and the services they provide to survivors,” said John Conley, Statesman Capitol 10,000 race director.

The Capitol 10,000 is the largest 10K race in Texas and one of the top 10 in the nation. The Statesman Capitol 10,000 began in 1978 with 3,400 participants. In 2013, the race had 18,382 registered participants. In its 37th year, the Cap10K will take place on April 6, 2014 in downtown Austin. Registration for the 2014 Statesman Cap 10K begins October 8, 2013 online at www.cap10k.com

H-E-B will return for a fifth year as presenting sponsor for the 2014 race.
